COMPOSTING

I remember my grandparents and even my parents, for a long time, had a composting bin at home where they collected food waste for composting.

Once enough material was collected, they would place it in a pit in the backyard and layer it with soil, grass clippings, leaves and water. Then, mix it every so often until it was ready to be used in the garden. It’s a great way to learn a new skill and use nature to help maintain our garden and back yards.

Fun fact: Compostable is not the same as biodegradable. Compostable objects are meant to degrade under the conditions of a compost pile (typically faster and forms nutrients that are good for plants). Biodegradable material is designed to breakdown (faster than plastics) but in a landfill environment, over a longer time. So, biodegradable material should go into regular trash and not composting bins. Look for a “compostable” label before putting them into compost bins.

I do not compost but am curious to know if any of you out there do it. I have seen online now that they have composting “kits”, particularly for ease of use and in apartments. Have you guys tried these? We would love to hear about your experiences and learn together!
